The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a public service program launched by the Government of India in 1969 with the vision of involving youth in nation-building activities. It operates under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and aims to develop the personality of students through community service. Inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, NSS encourages students to dedicate their time, energy, and skills for the upliftment of society while fostering a sense of social responsibility, leadership, and national unity.
NSS primarily works through schools, colleges, and universities, where students voluntarily participate in activities such as community development, health awareness, environmental protection, literacy drives, disaster relief, blood donation, and rural development. The scheme adopts the motto “Not Me, But You,” highlighting the spirit of selfless service and teamwork.
Over the years, NSS has become one of India’s most impactful youth programs, shaping responsible citizens who are sensitive to social problems and committed to making a positive difference. It not only provides hands-on experience in social work but also nurtures values of empathy, discipline, cooperation, and leadership among young volunteers.
